Born: 18 December, 1899.

Died: 27 May, 1941 aboard Bismarck.

Age (at the time of Bismarck's sinking): 41.

Rank (at the time of Bismarck's sinking): Fregattenkapitän.

Position: First Staff Officer (I. Admiralstabsoffizier, I. Asto).

Additional notes: Paul Ascher had been the artillery officer aboard the Panzerschiff Graf Spee during her cruise in the South Atlantic. He directed the fire that put the heavy cruiser Exeter out of action and damaged the Ajax during the epic battle of the River Plate on 13 December 1939. Paul Ascher was later interned in the Argentine after the scuttling of the ship, but scaped back to Germany.
