I showed my students a film about Pearl Harbor on Dec 7th, which concentrated on the USS Arizona, and I was curious about comparisons with others of the world's great ships. Your site on the Bismarck is beyond wonderful.Thank you for your dedication to this great ship and her gallant crew.

Magnicent site! You did a fine job with this. I have your site as one of my "favorites" on my web browser. I am currently building a 1/350 scale model of the Bismark, and used your line drawings to help me with the painting scheme.

A dear friend of mine bears the first name of Bismarck. I find this site most useful during my research of the origin of the name Bismarck, lives up to the legend of general and politician.

My Father was an orphan, real name Heinicke.
I am trying to trace my ancestry and wonder if Engineer Heinz Heinicke could have been a relative. My Grandfather,Friedrich Wilhelm Heinicke was of Berlin/Brandenburg origin. It would be an honour to be associated with such a vessel.

The story of the "Bismarck have been my favourite one since I was a little child and I've heard it the first time.I loved this ship, her lines, her brave sailors.it's a luck for the next generations that this story of beauty, braveness, chivalry and tragedy has been conserved and remembered. You're doing a great job.

In honour of those who never came back home,

As an ex marine engineer I have always been overawed by "big marine engineering". The german and english battle ships were with out doubt the best the world has seen. What a pity it is all lost. We, the next generation can only guess, and use wonderfull sites such as this to access this type of historical reality. A really great, and educational site.

I think you are making a serious error in listing the displacement of RN ships in metric tons rather than imperial tons. PoW = about 36.7k imperial tons, standard displacement. Bismarck about 46k imperial tons.

My son directed me to this site and in particular the photo and notes of one of the crew - Franz Halke. Frank, as he was come to be known, was my barber in Toronto for many years. Once I took my father-in-law to visit Frank while he was on a holiday from England. My father-in-law was a Royal Marine who served on the Rodney manning one of its canons during the battle with the Bismark. They had a short chat together and we read the newspaper clippings Frank had on his barbershop wall regarding himself and his link to the Bismark. It was neat being witness to these two old sailors meeting one another.

Further to my email of today. Franz Halke, a survior of the Bismarck, had a barbershop here in a suburb of Toronto and he cut my hair for years. When I told him my brother flew in one of he attacking Swordfish we had some interestng chats. He was a nice man but haunted by the horror of the occasion I believe.

Mr. Horan's well documented account of the Bismarck action was interesting for me as I am the brother of Jack Robert Geater (Swordfish (5M). He tried to interest me in the FAA in the early part of the war but all that water and the RN's antiquated aircraft were not for me, so it was the army and the Med.

The secret behind the bismarck has been my preoccupation since I was 7 years old, now that I am older and want to pick up a hobbie I need help. Some say I am a perfectionist in all i do, I will not attempt to try the bismarck, unless its a perfect job. Reason being is the bismarck is , was, and will always be the most exciting war memory event of the 19th century. E-mail me if you have recieved this message to confirm I`ve made contact. Please.merci..thank you.

All this talk of salvaging the Bismarck is not an ideal thing to do.Doing so will be a grave disrespect to Admiral Lutyens and his crew who went down with the ship doing their duties towards their nation, till thier end.As Dr.Ballard said,we can see,but not touch the wreck of the great battleship. Also let it remain as a monument for the brave sailors of that time who gave their todays for our tomorrow.More than that, the whole senselessness of war.Wonder if President Bush is listening.

I'm grateful for being able to read this excellent site which explains many technicalities. In particular, I hadn't realised the problems caused by not recognising the British ships and that different shells would be required for cruisers.
